Fellows Spotlight | Richard Morris
The fellowship experience through Circle City Fellows gives Fellows a structured environment to learn about how their work is meaningful to the Mission of God and to the flourishing of the City of Indianapolis (and beyond). During nine months, Fellows create deep connections with their peers, focus on building spiritual and professional practices, and create tangible ways in which they can impact their place of work.
Richard is originally from Tacoma, Washington. It was while studying at Dallas Theological Seminary that classmates first suggested Richard might make a good teacher. From there, he joined Teach for America as a special education teacher in South Carolina, and he has continued in the organization in various roles. Richard currently serves as the Chief Partnerships Officer for Teach for America Indianapolis.
Richard also loves spending time with his family (including parents, siblings, nieces and nephews), reading nonfiction, and connecting with friends (maybe over a Marvel movie or watching football).
Here’s a little of what he had to say about what he’s anticipating during his CCF experience:
How did you first connect with Circle City Fellows?
I first learned about this opportunity from Andrew Hart [CEO of The Oaks Academy and former CCF board member], when I connected with him about how he sees the integration of his faith and work. From there, I connected with David Bell to learn more about this opportunity and witnessed a cohort meeting.
Why are you interested in being a Fellow?
It is easy for me to lose the plot in life and at work. At my best, I can see how my work is directly connected to an outcome that serves people, specifically students. But it is especially easy on the days where a lot is demanded from me or where work feels too tedious, cyclical, or small — to forget the story of what God is doing in the world, in others, and in me. And I imagine it would be extremely beneficial to be in a space with a group of other adults re-immersing ourselves in that plotline together and encouraging each other to maximize our participation in God’s unfolding story.
Our mission is to help adults of faith like Richard come to see how their work matters to God and is an important part of Indianapolis’ flourishing. We’re so happy to have him as part of our fellowship class this year!
