Fellows Spotlight | Sarah Crosby
The fellowship experience through Circle City Fellows gives Fellows a structured environment to learn about how their work is meaningful to the Mission of God and to the flourishing of the City of Indianapolis (and beyond). During nine months, Fellows create deep connections with their peers, focus on building spiritual and professional practices, and create tangible ways in which they can impact their place of work. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I grew up in Northern Indiana.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
South Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis, Indiana.
WHAT DO YOU DO/WHERE DO YOU WORK?
I am an attorney with my own practice. My practice is mainly focused on helping people with Social Security Disability issues.
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE WITH CCF?
Todd Fisher, the pastor of my church, Christ Church Broad Ripple, recommended I check out CCF.
I DECIDED TO DO THE CCF FELLOWSHIP BECAUSE...
To be honest, doing the fellowship this year, given the pandemic, was a hard decision. But as we have started meeting and digging into the readings and discussions, I am glad I joined. The readings and discussions have been thought-provoking and, at times, challenging. I am excited to learn more about how we can use our lives to help Indianapolis thrive.
IN YOUR CURRENT WORK, (WHETHER THAT BE WORKING FULL TIME/PART TIME, GOING TO SCHOOL, OR RAISING CHILDREN) HOW DO YOU SEE THE MISSION OF GOD AT WORK?
I see it daily in being able to help clients when they are in some of the most desperate points of their lives - they are sick, unable to work, and need help. Navigating through government programs and red tape can be daunting, but I try to make it as easy as possible for them. I really see my practice as stemming from the mission of Isaiah 1:17 - “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”
THE FELLOWSHIP CONSISTS OF READING ARTICLES, PARTICIPATING IN COHORT DISCUSSIONS, MONTHLY SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES, ATTENDING SATURDAY FORUMS THAT FOCUS ON THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS, AND A COUPLE OF PROJECTS THAT WILL GROW YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIFE. WHICH OF THESE ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AND WHY?
I think the most important thing is to have diverse ideas and perspectives - whether from readings, discussions, or forums. I appreciate that our cohort and facilitators come from diverse backgrounds, denominations, and vocations and our conversations are a reflection of those different perspectives. Our readings and conversations are always respectful, but help challenge us to push deeper into areas that are new, unfamiliar and even sometimes challenging. I think that is where the greatest growth occurs.
BY THE END OF THE FELLOWSHIP, I HOPE TO HAVE…
New perspectives on how to best love and serve my neighbors and my city.
