Fellows Spotlight | Douglas Shaw

The fellowship experience through Circle City Fellows gives Fellows a structured environment to learn about how their work is meaningful to the Mission of God and to the flourishing of the City of Indianapolis (and beyond). During nine months, Fellows create deep connections with their peers, focus on building spiritual and professional practices, and create tangible ways in which they can impact their place of work. I enjoy picking up new hobbies, but since moving near Eagle Creek Park I've been running more.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE WITH CCF?

Through David Bell. I've known him since I moved to Indy 12 years ago.

I DECIDED TO DO THE CCF FELLOWSHIP BECAUSE...

I wanted to challenge myself to grow personally and professionally. I also wanted to learn more about my city and how I can better serve it.

CCF EXISTS TO HELP YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SEE HOW THEIR WORK MATTERS TO GOD AND HOW IT IS IMPORTANT TO HIS MISSION FOR THE WORLD. IS THIS SOMETHING YOUR FAMILY OR CHURCH TAUGHT YOU GROWING UP?

I was taught that I am important to God and his mission for the world, but I don't know that I made the connection of how work fits into that. To think of work that way now is exciting. It has also resulted in a healthy amount of introspection as to how I have been approaching work, and what it means for the next stage of my career.

IN YOUR CURRENT WORK, (WHETHER THAT BE WORKING FULL TIME/PART TIME, GOING TO SCHOOL, OR RAISING CHILDREN) HOW DO YOU SEE THE MISSION OF GOD AT WORK?

I see it in the personal connections I'm able to make with my coworkers. I don't think it's hard to see but it is easy to take for granted.

THE FELLOWSHIP CONSISTS OF READING ARTICLES, PARTICIPATING IN COHORT DISCUSSIONS, MONTHLY SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES, ATTENDING SATURDAY FORUMS THAT FOCUS ON THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS, AND A COUPLE OF PROJECTS THAT WILL GROW YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIFE. WHICH OF THESE ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AND WHY?

I am most looking forward to the Saturday forums and learning more about Indianapolis from people that have dedicated their lives to making it a better place. I think it is really easy to be a passive citizen when you live in a city as large as Indianapolis. I want to have a deeper sense of the city I call home and how I can serve it.

BY THE END OF THE FELLOWSHIP, I HOPE TO HAVE…

Have a clearer sense of how God is using me in the communities I'm a part of.
